March 18, 2010 - Guinot, world market leader in professional beauty treatments and skin care products, relies on Siemens MES solution

Compliace, efficiency and time to market.

Elan Software Systems, a Siemens Business dedicated to MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) software, part of Siemens Industry Automation, announced today that Guinot, leader in professional skincare products with international brands like Guinot, Mary Cohr and Masters Colors, has deployed the XFP MES software solution. With the MES software, Guinot automates its weigh & dispense and manufacturing operations, in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Ensure complete product quality
Leader of professional skincare products with over 50% market share, Guinot applies, since its inception, the pharmaceutical know-how to its cosmetic brands. With a market presence in over 11,000 beauty salons and spas in 70 countries, Guinot manufactures professional skin care and cosmetic products for such international brands as Mary Cohr and Master Colors. The company decided to fully automate its production processes, including inbound logistics, warehousing, preparation, weighing and dispensing, filling and finishing. Their main goal was to ensure full traceability of the production process and complete quality monitoring of finished products.

Between 5 and 10 ingredients go into most pharmaceuticals, whereas between 20 and 100 active ingredients need to be combined to formulate a skin care product. One of our top products contains no less than 56 active ingredients. Guinot’s manufacturing requirements comply with the same strict standards as in the medical or pharmaceutical fields.  This is why it is so vitally important that we are able to to rely on a MES software to automate all manufacturing processes.” said Yves-Marie Saunier, Plant Director “Manual tests and the associated stress, for instance, are no longer necessary. We were able to cover 95 percent of our manufacturing IT specifications as early as the RFI stage just using out of the box XFP features

Towards paperless manufacturing: efficiency and productivity
The deployment of XFP MES software simplifies and facilitates the day-to-day tasks of the operator by providing guided manufacturing and automatic controls. The risk of human error is minimized. The manufacturing team can work more efficiently; it guarantees total quality for customers.

The paper-based batch record has been reduced to the bare minimum, Guinot is moving toward a paperless manufacturing process with batch release by exception, a step toward green manufacturing. It also translates into faster time to market. With XFP MES, manufacturing information is tracked and traced in real time, archived in a unique repository.

The warehouse management features of the MES software enabled optimized material flows, offering real time visibility of raw materials. The XFP MES software integrates seamlessly with JDE, the ERP system in place at Guinot.

The optimization of materials and manufacturing processes provided by the MES software were key enablers for ISO 22716 certification. Guinot is one of the first cosmetics manufacturers to obtain this certification worldwide.
